What Is a Fraction?
A fraction is a special way to represent a part of a whole object or quantity. We write fractions in a specific format, which is called a numerator over a denominator. The denominator is the bottom number, and it tells us how many equal parts the whole is divided into. For example, if we have a pizza that is cut into 8 equal slices, the denominator would be 8. The numerator is the top number, and it tells us how many of those parts we actually have. So, if we have 3 slices of that pizza, we would write it as 3/8. This means we have 3 out of the 8 slices. Understanding fractions is very important because we use them in many everyday situations, such as sharing food with friends, measuring ingredients when we cook, or even when we play games that involve scoring. Learning about fractions helps us become better at math and makes it easier to understand the world around us!
