What Is Parametric Design?
Parametric design defines geometry through rules and relationships rather than fixed dimensions. Instead of drawing a facade with 200 individual panels, an architect defines parameters—panel width, rotation angle, spacing—and a script generates all 200 panels automatically. Changing one parameter updates every panel instantly. Grasshopper, a visual programming plugin for Rhino 3D, lets architects build these parametric definitions by connecting nodes (components) with wires on a canvas, without writing code. Firms like Zaha Hadid Architects, BIG, and Foster + Partners use parametric workflows to explore thousands of design variations in hours rather than weeks.
