The Parti: Big Idea
The parti (from the French 'prendre parti'—to make a decision) is the fundamental organizing idea that drives an architectural design. It can be expressed as a simple diagram: an L-shaped plan wrapping a courtyard, a linear bar connecting two wings, or a central atrium with radiating volumes. The parti resolves the major spatial and organizational challenges identified in programming—how public and private zones relate, where the entrance is, how circulation flows. A strong parti is memorable, diagrammable in a single sketch, and flexible enough to accommodate detailed development without losing its clarity.
