Developing Floor Plans
Schematic design transforms the parti diagram into scaled floor plans at 1:200 or 1/16"=1'-0". Each programmed space is assigned a specific location, dimensions are refined to structural grid spacing, and circulation paths (corridors, stairs, elevators) are defined. For the capstone library, the ground floor might include: entrance lobby (200 sq ft), children's area (2,500 sq ft) opening to the courtyard, makerspace (1,200 sq ft) with direct exterior access for deliveries, staff offices (800 sq ft), and restrooms. The upper floor houses the quiet reading room (3,000 sq ft) facing north, a periodicals lounge (1,000 sq ft), study rooms (600 sq ft), and the mechanical penthouse. Wall thicknesses, column locations, and stair dimensions must be realistic even at this early stage.
