Daylighting the Library
The schematic design places the reading room on the upper floor with a north-facing clerestory and a south-facing courtyard facade controlled by external horizontal louvers. A daylight simulation (using Climate Studio or Sefaira) confirms that 72% of the reading room floor area achieves sDA300/50—well above the LEED v4 threshold of 55%. The children's area benefits from large south-facing windows opening to the courtyard, with a deep overhang (1.2 meters) that blocks summer sun but admits winter light. East-facing windows in the makerspace use internal roller blinds to manage morning glare on workstations. Each facade strategy responds to its orientation—there is no one-size-fits-all glazing solution.
