CAN Bus Architecture
The Controller Area Network (CAN) bus is a two-wire serial communication system that lets electronic control modules share data without dedicated point-to-point wiring. Modern vehicles contain 30-100 modules connected on one or more CAN networks. High-speed CAN (500 kbps) links powertrain modules—the engine control module, transmission control module, and ABS module share data like vehicle speed, engine torque, and brake status. Low-speed CAN (125 kbps) connects body modules—door locks, windows, interior lighting, and the instrument cluster. A gateway module bridges the two networks, translating messages between them.
