Complete LCV Pre-Trip Inspection Procedure
The pre-trip inspection for a doubles or triples combination is substantially longer than for a single semi-trailer and must cover every vehicle in the combination. A systematic approach is essential. Begin at the tractor and proceed rearward through each component. For the lead trailer, the inspection is identical to a standard semi-trailer inspection. When you reach the rear of the lead trailer, inspect the pintle ring or hitch receiver for cracks, deformation, and security of mounting bolts. If the trailer was previously operated with a pintle connection, look for impact damage around the receiver from previous hard coupling events. For the converter dolly, inspect the drawbar and lunette eye, the fifth wheel assembly, the air tanks and brake chambers, the wheels and tires (dolly tires must match the size and rating of the combination), the landing gear, and all lighting circuits. Test the dolly's brakes individually by applying service pressure and confirming brake chamber pushrod movement at each wheel. For the rear trailer (and third trailer in a triples combination), repeat the full trailer inspection sequence. Pay special attention to the rear trailer's kingpin, apron, and landing gear, as these components experience different stresses than on lead trailers due to the floating axle effect of the dolly connection.
