Hazmat Shipping Paper Requirements
49 CFR Part 172, Subpart C requires that every hazmat shipment be accompanied by a shipping paper (bill of lading, manifest, or other document) that the driver must keep in the cab and accessible at all times during transport. Required information on shipping papers: (1) Proper Shipping Name β from Column 2 of the Hazardous Materials Table (49 CFR 172.101), not a trade name. Example: not 'gasoline' but 'Petroleum Naphtha' or the specific proper name. (2) Hazard Class or Division β 'Class 3' or 'Flammable Liquid'. (3) UN or NA Identification Number β 4-digit number prefixed with UN (international) or NA (North America only). (4) Packing Group β I (most dangerous), II (moderate), or III (minor danger). (5) Total Quantity β with units. (6) Emergency Contact β a 24-hour emergency response telephone number must appear on the shipping paper. The shipper is responsible for preparing correct shipping papers β but the driver is responsible for verifying that shipping papers are present and properly placed in the cab. Shipping papers must be within the driver's reach while driving and visible to emergency personnel when the driver is away from the vehicle. When away from the vehicle, the shipping papers must be in a door-mounted pocket or on the driver's seat.
