CHEMTREC: Function and Contact Protocol
CHEMTREC (Chemical Transportation Emergency Center) is a 24-hour emergency response service operated by the American Chemistry Council. Established in 1971, CHEMTREC serves as the primary chemical emergency response resource for transportation incidents involving hazardous materials in the United States. CHEMTREC's 24-hour emergency number: 1-800-424-9300 (U.S.); 1-703-527-3887 (international). In a HazMat transportation emergency, CHEMTREC provides: (1) Immediate technical advice to emergency responders about the chemical's properties, hazards, and immediate response actions; (2) Connection to the manufacturer or shipper who can provide detailed product-specific information; (3) Coordination with poison control centers for toxic exposures; (4) Notification assistance to federal agencies. When calling CHEMTREC, provide: your name and callback number; the location of the incident; the product name, UN number, and quantity if known; the type of emergency (spill, fire, leak, exposure); and whether anyone is injured. CHEMTREC specialists use the caller's information and the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and registration data to provide specific response guidance. All carriers shipping HazMat in the U.S. are strongly encouraged to register their shipments with CHEMTREC so product-specific information is immediately available when their UN number is called in.
