Emergency Exit Types and Locations
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS 217) and FMCSA regulations require passenger buses to have multiple emergency exits with specific minimum dimensions and operational requirements. A standard over-the-road motorcoach must have at least one emergency door at the rear, emergency windows on each side, and a roof hatch. Rear emergency doors must be at least 23 inches wide and 45 inches high. Each emergency window must provide an opening of at least 40 inches diagonally and must be openable from both inside and outside within 5 seconds without tools. Roof hatches must measure at least 18 by 30 inches in the open position. Before operating any passenger vehicle, familiarize yourself with the specific emergency exit locations, opening mechanisms, and escape routes for that vehicle. Exit marking lights must be functional and clearly visible from every seat position. Emergency exits must be unlocked and fully operational before loading any passengers. Check that no luggage, equipment, or other obstruction blocks any emergency exit path. On charter buses, the courier or tour director may be responsible for conducting a passenger emergency exit briefing β coordinate with this person before departure to ensure passengers receive accurate information.
