School Bus Pre-Trip Inspection Requirements
The school bus pre-trip inspection includes all standard commercial vehicle inspection items plus specific school bus components required by FMCSA Part 392 and NHTSA standards. Begin with the standard engine compartment, brakes, tires, and lighting inspection. School-bus-specific items include: the 8-way warning light system β test all eight lights (4 amber, 4 red alternating) for functionality; the stop arm β extend and retract it to verify the mechanism operates smoothly and locks in the extended position; the railroad crossing crossing arm (if equipped) β this arm extends from the driver's side front at the same time the stop arm deploys, creating an additional barrier to prevent students from walking in front of the bus; all interior emergency equipment including first aid kit, fire extinguisher, body fluid cleanup kit, and emergency reflectors; the interior lighting for the student compartment; the PA/intercom system; all passenger seats for secure mounting; all seat belt assemblies where required by state law; the two-way radio or communication device; and the student roster and route information documentation. In states with state-specific requirements (many states have inspection requirements that exceed FMCSA minimums for school buses), review your state transportation manual annually for current requirements.
