Advanced Alley Dock: Setup and Execution
The alley dock (90-degree backing) is the most frequently failed maneuver on the CDL basic control skills test, primarily because of incorrect setup. The setup position β where you park the tractor before initiating the backing sequence β determines 80% of your success. An incorrect setup forces you to use pull-ups or leads to cone strikes. For a standard left-side alley dock: drive past the dock opening and position the truck so your drive axle centerline is aligned with the center of the dock opening. From this setup position, you have approximately 45 degrees of pivot to work with as you back the trailer into the dock. Key reference point: when sitting in the driver's seat and looking in the left side flat mirror, the near corner of the dock opening (the front-left cone) should be visible at approximately the middle vertical height of the mirror. If the cone appears lower in the mirror, you have pulled too far forward. If it appears at the top of the mirror, you need to pull farther forward. The backing sequence: turn hard left (for a left dock) to initiate the trailer pivot. Monitor the left mirror continuously β you are watching for the trailer's far corner to approach the far-side dock boundary. When the trailer's rear has entered the dock opening at approximately 15-20 degrees off-parallel, begin counter-steering to the right. This timing point is critical β counter-steering too early will prevent the trailer from entering the dock; too late will result in the trailer overshooting the far boundary.
