The Core Distinction
The single most transformative craft instruction in fiction writing is show, don't tell. Telling gives the reader a label: 'She was nervous.' Showing gives the reader evidence from which they draw their own conclusion: 'She checked her phone three times in two minutes. Her thumbnail had been bitten to the quick.' The difference is the difference between being handed a verdict and watching a trial. Readers engage with evidence because the act of inference makes them active participants in the story. When readers figure something out, they feel it β when they are told it, they merely receive information. The rule applies beyond emotion. Telling: 'The neighborhood was dangerous.' Showing: 'Three streetlights on the block were broken. A pair of sneakers hung from the phone wire above the corner. The bodega had a metal roll-down gate even at noon.' Neither version uses the word 'dangerous,' yet the second communicates far more: menace, specific urban detail, the kind of neighborhood where certain things happen. Showing is not about length β a single precise detail can show more than a paragraph of telling.
