Curating Your Best Work
A professional writing portfolio is not a collection of everything you've written—it's a curated selection of your strongest pieces that demonstrates range and mastery. Include 5-8 pieces across at least two forms (short fiction, essays, excerpts from longer work). Each piece should showcase a different skill: one might demonstrate dialogue, another world-building, another prose style. Quality always beats quantity. A portfolio with three excellent pieces outperforms one with twenty mediocre ones.
