Mock Test Execution: Authentic Conditions
A mock test only produces useful diagnostic data if it is taken under conditions that closely replicate the real CUET exam. Many students take mock tests casually β pausing when distracted, checking answers during the test, or skipping unfamiliar questions entirely. This produces inflated scores that do not reflect real exam performance and miss the opportunity to build the psychological endurance required for the actual exam.
Authentic CUET mock test conditions require: (1) Fixed time window β the CUET Domain Subject paper is 45-60 minutes with no extensions; the General Test is 60 minutes. Set a timer and do not pause for any reason. (2) Complete isolation β no phone, no reference materials, no internet. CUET is a closed-book computer-based test; your practice environment should eliminate all resources. (3) The actual marking scheme β +5 correct, β1 incorrect, 0 unattempted. Mark your responses before checking answers, and apply the actual penalty during scoring. Many students score 10-15% higher when they skip the penalty, which gives a false baseline. (4) Paper order β complete Section I (Language) first, then Domain Section, then General Test, in the order and time limits specified by NTA, not in your preferred order.
Full-length mock tests should begin 8-10 weeks before the actual exam. In weeks 8-6 before the exam: one full mock per week, focused on building content knowledge and identifying weak topics. In weeks 5-3: two full mocks per week, focused on time management and reducing careless errors. In weeks 2-1: three full mocks per week plus topic-specific targeted practice for identified weak areas. The week before the exam: one mock (for rhythm maintenance only), then rest β no new content acquisition in the final 3 days.
Post-mock analysis is more valuable than the mock itself. Set aside equal time for analysis as for the test. The analysis session should occur within 2 hours of completing the test while the reasoning behind each answer is still fresh. Do not simply look up correct answers β for each wrong answer, reconstruct your reasoning, identify where it went wrong, and categorise the error type.
