Charging Levels Explained
EV charging is categorized by power level. Level 1 uses a standard 120V household outlet delivering 1.2-1.9 kW—adding roughly 4-5 miles of range per hour, suitable only for plug-in hybrids or overnight topping. Level 2 operates at 208-240V on a dedicated circuit delivering 3.3-19.2 kW, adding 15-60 miles per hour and serving as the backbone for home and workplace charging. DC fast charging (DCFC) bypasses the vehicle's onboard charger entirely, pushing 50-350 kW of DC power directly into the battery, delivering 150-1,000 miles of range per hour for highway corridor charging.
