Depot Layout Principles
A fleet charging depot must balance vehicle flow, charger accessibility, electrical distribution efficiency, and safety. Vehicles should pull through or back into charging spots to minimize maneuvering—especially important for larger medium and heavy-duty vehicles. Charger pedestals should be positioned to avoid cable routing across traffic lanes. The electrical room housing switchgear and transformers should be centrally located to minimize conductor run lengths, which reduces voltage drop and copper costs. Adequate lighting, emergency shutoff buttons, and fire suppression systems rated for lithium-ion battery incidents are required throughout.
