Earthquake Response: Drop-Cover-Hold On
The moment shaking begins in an earthquake, execute Drop-Cover-Hold On: DROP to your hands and knees (this prevents you from being knocked over); take COVER under a sturdy desk or table, or if none is available, cover your head and neck with your arms; HOLD ON to your shelter until shaking stops. This position protects against falling debris β the primary cause of earthquake injuries and deaths β and keeps you mobile. Common myths debunked: the 'triangle of life' theory (standing in doorways or next to furniture) is discredited by FEMA and structural engineers; modern doorways are not reinforced and offer no special protection. Do NOT run outside during shaking β most injuries occur when people attempt to move. If outdoors, move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires. If in a vehicle, pull over away from bridges, overpasses, and power lines, and stay inside. After shaking stops: expect aftershocks, check for injuries, shut off gas if you smell a leak (use the wrench in your emergency kit β turn the valve 90Β°), and assess structural safety before re-entering a building. The USGS ShakeAlert system provides up to 60 seconds of warning in some regions of the western US via Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA).
