Search Methodology
CERT search and rescue focuses on lightly damaged structures where entry is reasonably safe β not heavily collapsed buildings, which require professional urban search and rescue teams with specialized equipment. Before entering, CERT members mark the building exterior with the INSARAG marking system: a single slash when the search begins, an X when complete, with the number of live and deceased victims found noted. Inside, teams of two use a systematic room-by-room search pattern: start left, work clockwise, calling out loudly ('Is anyone in here? If you can hear me, tap on something') and listening for responses. Document everything β location, victim count, hazards β for professional responders who will follow.
