Festival Tiers and Strategy
Film festivals exist in tiers based on industry influence: Tier 1 (Sundance, Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Berlin) are launchpads for major distribution deals—Sundance selections frequently receive offers in the millions. Tier 2 (Tribeca, SXSW, Telluride, Locarno) offer significant press and industry exposure. Tier 3 (genre festivals, regional festivals, niche festivals) build audience and critical reception. Strategy: submit to 2-3 Tier 1 festivals first (they require world premieres). If rejected, move to Tier 2 (some accept North American premieres). Then Tier 3 (many accept regional premieres). Never premiere at a small festival if you're still awaiting Tier 1 responses—you can't un-premiere. Budget $3,000-$10,000 for submission fees across 15-30 festivals.
