Dietary Patterns Over Single Nutrients
Modern nutrition science has shifted from studying individual nutrients to studying dietary patterns—the overall combination of foods a person habitually consumes. This shift occurred because nutrients interact synergistically: the heart-protective effect of the Mediterranean diet cannot be replicated by supplementing individual Mediterranean components (olive oil, fish oil, red wine) in isolation. The PREDIMED trial (7,447 participants, randomized) showed that a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts reduced cardiovascular events by 30% compared to a low-fat diet. No single-nutrient supplement has ever achieved this magnitude of benefit in a large RCT.
