Breathing at the Surface
Dolphins are NOT fish β they are MAMMALS! Like you, they breathe air with lungs. A dolphin's nostril is called a BLOWHOLE and it is on top of its head. Dolphins surface every few minutes to take a breath. They can hold their breath for up to 10 minutes when diving deep. Here is an amazing fact: dolphins sleep with HALF their brain at a time! One half sleeps while the other half stays awake to control breathing and watch for sharks. They literally never fully fall asleep!
