Tasting the Air
A snake's forked tongue is one of the coolest things in nature! When a snake flicks its tongue out, it is collecting tiny scent particles from the air. The tongue pulls these particles back into the mouth and touches them to the JACOBSON'S ORGAN β a special scent-detector in the roof of the mouth. The two tips of the forked tongue tell the snake which DIRECTION a smell is coming from β left or right! This is how snakes track prey, find mates, and navigate. They are literally tasting the air!
