Coil Building
The coil technique is all about rolling clay into long snake shapes and stacking them on top of each other to build walls!
How to make a coil: take a piece of clay and roll it back and forth on the table with your palms. Keep rolling until it becomes a long, thin rope shape, like a snake. Try to make it even thickness all the way along.
How to build with coils:
Step 1: Make a flat circle base. Roll out a flat piece of clay and cut a circle shape for the bottom of your pot.
Step 2: Roll your first coil. Score (scratch) the top edge of the base and the bottom of the coil. Add a little water. Place the coil around the edge of the base circle.
Step 3: Stack another coil on top of the first one, using the slip and score method each time.
Step 4: Keep stacking coils higher and higher! Each layer of coils makes the walls taller.
Step 5: Smooth the inside with your finger to blend the coils together and make the pot strong. You can leave the outside showing the coil texture (it looks cool!) or smooth it too.
Coil building lets you make much taller and bigger pots than pinch pots! You can make vases, tall cups, planters, and even large sculptures.
