Touch and Feel
Texture is how something feels when you touch it, or how it looks like it would feel. Texture is one of the most important elements in art because it makes artwork feel real and interesting.
There are many types of texture. Here are four main ones:
Rough texture feels scratchy and uneven, like sandpaper, tree bark, a brick wall, or a rough rock. When you run your hand over something rough, you can feel the bumps and scratches.
Smooth texture feels flat and even, like glass, a polished table, a calm lake, or a new crayon. Your hand slides easily over smooth things.
Bumpy texture has raised spots or lumps, like bubble wrap, a golf ball, a toad's back, or an ear of corn. Your fingers can feel each individual bump.
Soft texture feels gentle and cushiony, like a kitten's fur, a cotton ball, a fluffy towel, or a feather. Soft things make you want to keep touching them!
