The Four Parts of a Great Salad
Every delicious salad has four parts:
1. GREENS (the base): Lettuce, spinach, mixed greens, arugula, or kale. Greens are the foundation of your salad β the leafy bed everything else sits on.
- Romaine lettuce: Crispy, crunchy, mild flavor β the most popular salad green
- Spinach: Dark green, tender, packed with iron and vitamins
- Mixed greens: A blend of different baby lettuces β variety in every bite
- Iceberg: Very crunchy and watery, mild taste
2. TOPPINGS (the color): Vegetables, fruits, and crunchy bits that add flavor, color, and texture.
- Cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, red onion, bell peppers
- Dried cranberries, apple slices, mandarin oranges
- Croutons, sunflower seeds, shredded cheese
3. PROTEIN (the power): Makes your salad filling and gives you energy.
- Grilled chicken, hard-boiled eggs, cheese cubes, beans, tuna
4. DRESSING (the flavor): Coats everything and ties the flavors together.
- Ranch, Italian, vinaigrette, lemon juice with olive oil
