The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was not actually underground, and it was not a railroad! It was a secret network of safe houses and brave people who helped enslaved people escape to freedom in the North and Canada. The routes were secret and changed often. People used special code words: safe houses were called 'stations,' the people who helped were called 'conductors,' and the escapees were called 'passengers.'
