Spy and Scout
During the Civil War, Harriet worked for the Union Army as a spy, scout, and nurse. She became the first woman to lead an armed military raid in American history! In 1863, she guided the Combahee River Raid, which freed over 700 enslaved people. She used the same skills she had developed on the Underground Railroad: courage, secrecy, and knowledge of the land.
