Spring: The Growing Season Begins!
After a cold winter, spring brings warmth and rain β perfect for plants to start growing!
Spring fruits and vegetables:
- Strawberries: The first fruit of the year! Spring strawberries are bright red, juicy, and sweet. Nothing beats a fresh spring strawberry.
- Asparagus: Tall green spears that pop up from the ground in early spring. They grow so fast you can almost watch them!
- Peas: Sweet little green balls in a pod. Sugar snap peas are so sweet you can eat the whole pod.
- Lettuce and spinach: Cool-weather greens that love spring. They grow fast and taste tender.
- Radishes: Red and white root vegetables that add a peppery crunch to salads. They grow in just 25 days!
- Artichokes: Big, green, thistle-like vegetables. You pull off leaves and eat the tender base of each one.
Spring is also when farmers plant seeds for summer crops. Tomato and pepper seedlings go into the ground. Corn and bean seeds are planted. The garden is full of promise!
Spring tip: Visit a farmer's market in April or May to find the freshest spring produce.
