Why Make a Ten?

Adding to 10 is easy: 10+3=13, 10+5=15, 10+7=17. You just put a 1 in front of the other number! So if you can turn a hard problem like 8+5 into a 10-something problem, it becomes much easier. That is exactly what the make-a-ten strategy does.
