Tally Time!
Kai uses tally marks to track cups sold. Every line is 1 sale. Every 5th line crosses the group: |||| = 5.
Morning sales: |||| |||| || = 12 cups
Afternoon sales: |||| ||| = 8 cups
Total cups sold: 12 + 8 = 20 cups. They sold every cup!
Tally marks are quick and easy — you don't need a calculator. Just draw a line for each sale and count the groups of 5.
**Think About It:** 4 groups of 5 = 20. That matches 12 + 8 = 20. ✓
