Silence Is Music Too!
Here is a surprising idea: silence is just as important as sound in music! The pauses between notes give music its shape and feeling. Without silence, music would be one continuous noise.
In written music, silence is shown by special symbols called rests. Just like notes tell you WHEN to play and for HOW LONG, rests tell you WHEN to be silent and for HOW LONG.
Every type of note has a matching rest that lasts the same number of beats:
- Quarter rest = 1 beat of silence (matches the quarter note)
- Half rest = 2 beats of silence (matches the half note)
- Whole rest = 4 beats of silence (matches the whole note)
When you see a rest, you do NOT clap or play anything. You stay silent but keep counting! The beat does not stop during a rest β you just do not make sound. Think of it as taking a breath while the music continues.
