All About Elephants
Elephants are the largest animals that live on land. An adult elephant can weigh as much as a school bus! Elephants live in Africa and Asia. They live in groups called herds. The leader of the herd is usually an older female called the matriarch. Elephants have long trunks that they use to breathe, smell, drink water, and grab food. They can pick up something as small as a peanut with their trunk! Elephants eat plants β lots and lots of plants. They can eat 300 pounds of food in one day! Baby elephants are called calves. A newborn calf weighs about 250 pounds. Elephants are very smart. They can feel happy, sad, and even grieve when a family member dies.
