What Is a Poem?

My cat is soft, my cat is round, / She makes a little purring sound. / She sleeps all day upon my bed, / And dreams of chasing mice, I said. / At night she wakes and starts to play, / She pounces, leaps, then runs away! / My cat is silly, my cat is sweet, / From whisker tip to fuzzy feet.

This is a poem! Poems are special writing that uses words to create pictures, sounds, and feelings. Poems often have short lines, rhyming words, and a rhythm you can feel when you read aloud.
