What Is an Adaptation?
An adaptation is a special body feature or behavior that helps an animal survive in its environment. A polar bear's thick white fur is an adaptation β it keeps the bear warm AND hidden in the snow. A duck's webbed feet are an adaptation for swimming. A giraffe's long neck is an adaptation for reaching tall trees. Over thousands and thousands of years, animals slowly developed these amazing features that help them eat, hide, and stay alive!
