The Magic of Silent E

When you add an E to the end of a short word, something magical happens — the vowel in the middle changes its sound! The E itself is silent (you don't say it), but it makes the other vowel say its NAME. Compare CAN and CANE. CAN has a short A sound. CANE has a long A sound — the A says its own name. That's magic E!
