Meteorologists β Weather Scientists
Meteorologists are scientists who study and predict the weather. They use amazing technology to keep us safe!
Doppler radar sends out radio waves that bounce off raindrops, hail, and even the wind inside storms. It can detect a tornado forming INSIDE a storm before it even touches the ground!
Weather satellites orbit Earth and take pictures of clouds, storms, and ocean temperatures from space. They can see a hurricane forming days before it becomes dangerous.
Weather balloons are released twice a day from 900 locations around the world. They carry instruments that measure temperature, humidity, wind speed, and air pressure as they rise through the atmosphere.
All this data goes into supercomputers that run weather models β mathematical predictions of what the weather will do next.
