Red, White, and Blue
The flag of the United States of America is one of the most recognized flags in the world! It has three main parts:
13 red and white STRIPES that alternate (red, white, red, white...). These represent the original 13 colonies that became the first 13 states when America was born in 1776.
50 white STARS on a blue background in the upper left corner. Each star represents one of the 50 states. The blue background is called the 'canton.'
The colors have meanings too: RED stands for bravery and valor. WHITE stands for purity and innocence. BLUE stands for vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
The flag is nicknamed 'Old Glory' and 'The Stars and Stripes.' It flies at government buildings, schools, and homes across the country.
