Common Patterns in Flags
If you look at many flags, you will notice patterns! The most common flag colors are red, white, and blue β used by more than 30 countries including the USA, UK, France, Russia, and Australia.
Many African flags use green, yellow (gold), and red β these are called Pan-African colors. They represent the lush land, mineral wealth, and blood of those who fought for freedom. Countries like Ghana, Ethiopia, Cameroon, and Senegal use these colors.
Many Arab and Muslim-majority countries use green, which is considered the color of Islam. You will see green in the flags of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Algeria.
Stars are the most common symbol on flags β about 60 countries have stars! Crosses appear on about 30 flags, mostly European countries. Crescents (half-moons) appear on about 15 flags, often in Muslim-majority nations.
