The Perfect Greeting
The greeting is the first thing the person reads, so make it warm and friendly!
Always start with 'Dear' followed by the person's name and a COMMA:
- Dear Mom,
- Dear Mr. Johnson,
- Dear Best Friend,
- Dear Pen Pal,
- Dear Santa,
Important rules:
- 'Dear' always starts with a capital D
- The person's name always starts with a capital letter
- Always put a comma after the name
- Start writing the body on the NEXT line
Some people use other greetings like 'Hi Mom,' or 'Hello Friend,' — these are fine for casual letters. But 'Dear' is the classic, proper way to start a friendly letter.
The greeting sets the tone for the whole letter. It tells the reader: this letter is for YOU, and I am happy to be writing to you!
