The peregrine falcon is the FASTEST animal on the planet! During a hunting dive (called a STOOP), it tucks its wings and plummets toward prey at over 240 MILES PER HOUR! That is faster than a race car, faster than a bullet train, faster than any other living thing. At this speed, the falcon hits its prey (usually a pigeon or duck in midair) with its talons. The impact is devastating. Peregrines were once nearly extinct due to the pesticide DDT, but after DDT was banned, they made an amazing comeback. They now nest on skyscraper ledges in major cities!
