40,000 Muscles!
An elephant's trunk is the most versatile body part in the animal kingdom! It is actually a fusion of the nose and upper lip, and it contains about 40,000 muscles (your entire body has only about 600!). A trunk can be 6 to 7 feet long and weigh 300 pounds. Despite its strength, a trunk is so precise that an elephant can pick up a single peanut or a blade of grass. Trunks can suck up 2 gallons of water at a time and spray it into the elephant's mouth or onto its back for a shower!
