Eating Machines
Elephants are herbivores that eat up to 300 POUNDS of food per day! They eat grass, leaves, bark, roots, and fruit. An elephant spends about 16 hours a day eating! They drink about 50 gallons of water daily β that is like filling a bathtub! Elephants are important for ecosystems because they spread seeds in their dung (poop) across wide areas. Some tree seeds actually need to pass through an elephant's digestive system before they can sprout! Without elephants, some trees would disappear.
