Elephants in Danger
Both African and Asian elephants are endangered. Poaching for ivory tusks has killed hundreds of thousands of elephants. In 1979, there were about 1.3 million African elephants β today there are fewer than 400,000. Habitat loss is another huge threat: as human cities and farms expand, elephant habitats shrink. Human-elephant conflict happens when elephants wander into farms and eat crops. Climate change is making droughts worse, reducing the water and food elephants depend on.
