Meet the Dodo
The dodo was a large, flightless bird about 3 feet tall and weighing about 50 pounds. It had a big hooked beak, tiny useless wings, thick legs, and a tuft of curly feathers on its tail. Dodos lived ONLY on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Because Mauritius had no natural predators, dodos evolved to be flightless β they had no reason to fly! They ate fruit, seeds, and nuts that fell on the forest floor. Dodos were probably not stupid (despite the phrase 'dumb as a dodo') β they just had no experience with danger.
