The Saber-Toothed Cat
Before we talk about saving animals, meet one more extinct legend! The saber-toothed cat (Smilodon) had massive 7-inch-long canine teeth that curved down from its upper jaw like sabers! Despite the name, it was NOT a tiger β it was its own unique species. Smilodons were ambush predators that hunted bison, horses, and even baby mammoths. They went extinct about 10,000 years ago, likely due to climate change reducing their prey species and competition with early humans. Thousands of Smilodon fossils have been found in the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles!
