Tool Users!
Gorillas use tools in the wild! Scientists have observed gorillas using sticks to test the depth of water before crossing a stream, using logs as bridges over muddy areas, and using rocks to crack open nuts. One gorilla was seen using a tree trunk as a walking stick for balance! In captivity, gorillas have learned even more complex tool use. Gorillas share 98% of their DNA with humans β making them one of our closest living relatives (chimpanzees share 99%). Their hands have opposable thumbs just like ours!
