Art Without Real Things
Most art you see shows real things β a dog, a tree, a person, a house. You can look at it and say, 'Oh, that is a painting of a cat!' That kind of art is called representational art because it represents (shows) real things.
But there is another kind of art called abstract art. Abstract art does NOT show real things. Instead, it uses shapes, colors, and lines to express ideas and feelings. When you look at abstract art, you might see circles, squares, splashes, stripes, and swirls β but not a cat or a tree.
Some people look at abstract art and say, 'I do not understand it,' or 'My little brother could paint that!' But abstract art is much more than random scribbles. Each shape, color, and line is chosen carefully by the artist to make you FEEL something.
Bright red might make you feel excited or angry. Cool blue might make you feel calm or sad. Sharp zigzag lines might feel scary or energetic. Smooth curved lines might feel peaceful and gentle.
Abstract art is like music for your eyes. You do not need to 'see' anything specific β you just need to feel it.
