Collage: Art from Pieces
Collage is a type of art where you glue different materials onto a surface to create a picture or design. The word collage comes from the French word coller, which means to glue!
Instead of drawing or painting everything, collage artists cut, tear, and arrange pieces of paper, fabric, photographs, and other materials. They layer these pieces on top of each other and glue them down to create something new and exciting.
Collage was made famous by artists like Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque over 100 years ago. They were the first to glue newspaper, wallpaper, and fabric into their paintings. Before that, nobody thought of sticking real materials onto a canvas! Today, collage is one of the most popular art forms in the world.
