The Scottish Kilt
The kilt is Scotland's most famous garment. It is a knee-length skirt made from woolen cloth in a pattern called tartan (plaid). Each Scottish family, or clan, has its own unique tartan pattern with specific colors. Kilts have been worn for hundreds of years. They are worn with a sporran (a pouch), knee-high socks, and sometimes a beret called a tam o'shanter. Kilts are worn proudly at celebrations, weddings, and Highland Games.
